Helpful Hints to Ensure a Better Biking Experience
1. Preventative Maintenance
Cover your bike to protect it from moisture which can cause rusting. This is especially important in close proximity to the beach because of the large amount of salt in the air. Rust not only ruins the look of the bike, it cause damage to important parts such as the chain, chainring, and sprockets. When those parts rust they are weakened and will not run as smooth. Try and wipe sand and mud off the bike after rides, and a little oil on the chain goes a long way. We don’t encourage riding the bikes in the rain or on sand, but you can. Fenders prevent water and sand from spraying up on you.
2. Service
All new bikes are should be kept on a regular maintenance schedule. The crusiers are very low-maintenance and should be tuned 1-2 months after purchase, and once or twice a year thereafter depending on how often you ride. The commuters require a little more careful attention in brake and gear adjustments. For this we recommend taking it to a local shop, or professional bike mechanic. Commuter tune-up's should be as or more frequent than cruisers.
3. Lock it up
Unfortunately bike happens. U-Locks are the safest lock because it is the hardest to cut, and can not be cut easily. Lock the frame of your bike to a grounded object such as a bike rack, sign post, gate, etc…Wheels, seats, and accessories can be taken too, so if your leaving the bike for a long period of time try to remove attractive accessories. Mot importantly, don't lock you bike up by a wheel!
4. Be aware of your surroundings
There’s a lot of nice scenery by the beach. Kids, dogs, skateboards, and other bikers can make for interesting obstacles to avoid.
